Government’s Initiative to Stabilize Wheat Prices and Offer Affordable Atta to Consumers

To stabilize wheat and atta prices, the government has allocated 2.5 LMT of wheat at Rs.21.50/kg for Semi-Government and cooperative organizations such as Kendriya Bhandar, National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation of India Limited (NCCF), and National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd. (NAFED) under the Open Market Sale Scheme [OMSS(D)]. This allocation aims to produce atta, branded as ‘Bharat Atta,’ and offer it for sale to the public at an MRP not exceeding ₹27.50/kg, thereby ensuring its availability at an affordable rate through outlets like Kendriya Bhandar, NAFED, NCCF, and state government cooperatives.

‘Bharat Atta’ is made available by these organizations at an MRP lower than the nationwide average retail prices of Atta.

As of November 16, 2023, the stock of wheat in the Central Pool stands at 209.85 Lakh MT.

The Government of India facilitates the provision of wheat for processing and the sale of atta by central/state cooperative agencies through physical and mobile retail outlets across the country.

Union Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Ms. Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, provided this information in a written reply today in Lok Sabha.
