In a monumental move, the Union Cabinet, spearheaded by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, granted approval to Micron’s proposal for establishing a semiconductor unit in India, investing ₹22,516 crore (equivalent to 2.75 billion dollars) in June 2023. This decision included 50% fiscal support on a pari-passu basis. Within a swift three months, the groundbreaking ceremony for this pioneering unit took place in Sanand, Gujarat, in September 2023.
The construction of this state-of-the-art unit is progressing rapidly and is anticipated to reach completion within approximately 12 months. The unit aims to manufacture memory and storage products catering to both domestic consumption and global export markets.
Anticipated to generate around 5,000 direct employment opportunities and 15,000 indirect job opportunities over the next five years, the Micron unit is a significant contributor to employment growth. To ensure a skilled workforce, the India Semiconductor Mission, the Government of Gujarat, and Micron are collaborating closely with academia to train nearly 10,000 engineers.
The project’s influence extends beyond Micron’s operations, with discussions underway involving over 30 industries—spanning gasses, chemicals, equipment, substrate manufacturing, and ancillary services—exploring opportunities to set up facilities in Gujarat.
Recently, agreements were inked among Micron, the India Semiconductor Mission, and the Government of Gujarat, ensuring timely adherence to project milestones and facilitating incentives disbursement.
Expressing delight at the unwavering support, Shri Gurusharan Singh, Senior Vice President for Micron, conveyed gratitude to the central and state leadership for their constant backing.
During the event, Union Minister of Railways, Communications, and Electronics & IT, Shri Ashwini Vishnaw, praised the seamless coordination between the Government of Gujarat, Government of India, and the industry. He pledged complete commitment and facilitation for the growth of the semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem in India.
Chief Minister of Gujarat, Shri Bhupendra Patel, shared his enthusiasm about the project’s rapid developmental pace, highlighting its global significance in the technology manufacturing sphere. The strides made in setting up this high-tech semiconductor unit underscore India’s growing prowess in the global tech manufacturing landscape.
