Government of India’s Coal and Lignite Exploration Strategies and Findings

The Government of India, through the Central Sector Scheme, conducts coal and lignite exploration via CMPDI in two primary stages: regional exploration and detailed drilling. Additionally, coal exploration receives funding through NMET. GSI also engages in coal and lignite exploration. The specifics of coal/lignite exploration programs executed in the preceding year (2022-23) are provided in the Annexure.

Notably, Rajasthan has no coal reserves. According to the Inventory of India issued by GSI for Coal and Lignite as of April 1, 2022, Rajasthan possesses 6457.72 million tonnes of lignite resources. Presently, Neyveli Lignite Corporation India Limited (NLCIL) operates one open-cast lignite mine with a capacity of 2.1 MTPA at Barsingsar in the Bikaner District of Rajasthan. However, there are no immediate plans for further new mining activities in Rajasthan.

The projected coal demand for 2023-24 stands at 1196.60 Million Tonnes.
