In a strategic move aimed at advancing infrastructure development in the North East region of India, the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (#MDoNER) orchestrated a crucial Workshop on New Technologies for Road Construction. This significant event, held on January 8th, 2024, under the chairmanship of Joint Secretary Shri Angshuman Dey, unfolded at Vigyan Bhawan, witnessing the convergence of 55 officials, including senior representatives from MDoNER, the North East Council, and the State Governments of the North Eastern states.
The workshop’s primary objective was to sensitize the State Governments of the North East Region (NER) about newly approved road construction technologies endorsed by the Indian Roads Congress (IRC). The aim is to promote the adoption of these innovative techniques, emphasizing the optimal utilization of unconventional materials and cost-effective, environmentally friendly methodologies in constructing roads sanctioned under the North Eastern Region Infrastructure Development Scheme (#NESIDS) Roads scheme of MDoNER.
Diverse expertise was brought to the table through guest speakers from key entities such as the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (#MoRTH), Central Road Research Institute (#CRRI), Ministry of Rural Development (#MoRD), and specialized private agencies. These experts illuminated the workshop attendees on a spectrum of groundbreaking road construction technologies. Discussions encompassed topics including Nano Polymer-based Soil Stabilization, Water Resistant Road Technology, Soil Stabilization methods, Cold Mix Technology, Full Depth Reclamation, and Cell Filled Concrete roads, among others.
The workshop served as a platform for knowledge exchange, empowering the officials from the North Eastern states with insights into these innovative technologies. It highlighted the potential of these methods in revolutionizing road construction, improving durability, minimizing environmental impact, and optimizing costs.
By introducing these advanced road construction methodologies to the stakeholders in the North East, the MDoNER aims to spearhead a paradigm shift in infrastructure development in the region. These technologies, aligned with global best practices, are poised to bring about transformative changes, ensuring the creation of robust and sustainable road networks vital for the region’s socio-economic progress.
This concerted effort to integrate new technologies underscores the government’s commitment to fostering development in the North East. The workshop’s outcomes are expected to catalyze the adoption of innovative road construction practices, paving the way for enhanced connectivity, improved transportation, and overall socio-economic growth in India’s North Eastern states.
