The 1st meeting of the Mission Governing Board (MGB) of the National Quantum Mission (NQM) convened under the leadership of Dr. Ajai Chowdhry, Chairman of MGB and Founder of HCL Technologies. The session delved into crucial aspects of NQM’s implementation strategy and timelines, emphasizing the establishment of the Mission Coordination Cell (MCC).
The MCC, to be situated in an institution identified by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), will serve as a pivotal coordinating agency for the mission. Functioning under the guidance of the Mission Technology Research Council (MTRC), the MCC will play a central role in synchronizing efforts with the Mission Secretariat.
Dr. Ajai Chowdhry highlighted the genesis of quantum technology in India, emphasizing that NQM is poised to propel the nation forward in this field. Identifying manpower and startups as key focus areas, he underscored the need to nurture talent and innovative ventures.
Professor A K Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, emphasized the critical role of creating human resources and suggested empowering hubs to build capacity. Dr. V K Saraswat, Member of NITI Aayog, stressed the importance of developing indigenous systems and advocated for industry participation in technology and fund sharing.
Professor Abhay Karandikar, Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology, disclosed NQM’s plan to establish four mission hubs in Quantum Computing, Quantum Communication, Quantum Sensing & Metrology, and Quantum Materials & Devices. These hubs will serve as collaborative platforms, bringing together academia, research and development labs, and industry players to drive advancements in quantum technology within the country.
