The Indian Navy is set to elevate its maritime capabilities with the commissioning of the state-of-the-art Survey Vessel Sandhayak on February 3, 2024. This significant event will take place at Naval Dockyard, Vizag, in the esteemed presence of the Hon’ble Raksha Mantri, Shri Rajnath Singh, serving as the Chief Guest. The ceremony will witness the participation of distinguished guests, including Admiral R Hari Kumar, Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, FOC-in-C Eastern Naval Command, and other senior naval officers and officials from Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata.
Sandhayak, the first of four Survey Vessel (Large) ships developed under the guidance of the Warship Design Bureau of the Indian Navy, was delivered on December 4, 2023. The ship successfully completed a rigorous trial program, both in harbor and at sea, showcasing its capabilities and readiness for active service (source: Press Release).
Designed primarily for hydrographic surveys, Sandhayak will play a crucial role in assessing ports, harbors, navigational channels/routes, coastal areas, and deep seas, contributing to safe marine navigation. Beyond its primary function, the vessel is equipped to undertake a range of naval operations.
At the heart of Sandhayak’s prowess lies its state-of-the-art hydrographic equipment, including Deep & Shallow Water Multi-Beam Echo-Sounders, Autonomous Underwater Vehicle, Remotely Operated Vehicle, Side Scan Sonars, Data Acquisition and Processing System, satellite-based positioning systems, and terrestrial survey equipment. This vessel, reincarnated from its decommissioned predecessor on June 4, 2021, is powered by two Diesel Engines, capable of reaching speeds exceeding 18 knots.
Measuring an impressive 110 meters in length, displacing 3400 tons, and boasting an 80% indigenous content, Sandhayak stands as a testament to India’s growing shipbuilding prowess, aligning with the national vision of AatmaNirbharBharat. It not only signifies a significant addition to the naval fleet but also exemplifies India’s commitment to self-reliance in shipbuilding.
