In collaboration with Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) and Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM), we are excited to announce the ‘Women for Water, Water for Women Campaign’ – a unique initiative to observe ‘Jal Diwali’ from November 7th to November 9th, 2023. This campaign aims to champion clean water accessibility and women empowerment, two crucial facets of sustainable development. Through a series of events, discussions, and activities, we intend to shed light on the interconnection between women and water, demonstrating the transformative power of empowered women in managing our most vital resource – water.
Water: The Essence of Life
Water is often referred to as the elixir of life, and its significance cannot be overstated. It is essential for drinking, agriculture, sanitation, and sustaining ecosystems. Access to clean and safe water is a basic human right, as recognized by the United Nations. However, millions of people worldwide still lack access to clean and safe drinking water, a situation that disproportionately affects women in many developing regions.
The Water-Gender Nexus
The relationship between water and gender is complex and multifaceted. In many communities, it is primarily women who bear the responsibility of fetching water for their families. This time-consuming task often involves long, arduous journeys to distant water sources, leaving little time for education, income generation, or community involvement. The ‘Women for Water, Water for Women Campaign’ aims to highlight the critical role women play in managing water resources, as well as the challenges they face in doing so.
Empowering Women Through Water
Empowering women in water management can lead to significant improvements in water accessibility, sanitation, and overall community well-being. When women are actively involved in decision-making processes related to water resources, they can champion the equitable distribution of water and sanitation services, ensuring that the needs of their communities are met. This not only results in better water quality but also leads to the overall development of the community.
Key Objectives of the Campaign
