DRDO Successfully Tests Next-Generation AKASH Missile, Enhancing India’s Air Defence Capabilities

In a significant achievement, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted a successful flight test of the New Generation AKASH (AKASH-NG) missile from the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur, off the coast of Odisha on January 12, 2024. The test, conducted against a high-speed unmanned aerial target at very low altitude, showcased the advanced capabilities of the AKASH-NG missile system.

Successful Intercept and Destruction:

During the flight test, the AKASH-NG missile system demonstrated its effectiveness by successfully intercepting and destroying the high-speed unmanned aerial target. The indigenously developed Radio Frequency Seeker, Launcher, Multi-Function Radar, and Command, Control & Communication system worked seamlessly, validating the functioning of the complete weapon system.

Validation through Advanced Tracking Systems:

The system’s performance was rigorously validated through data captured by a range of advanced tracking systems, including Radars, Telemetry, and Electro Optical Tracking System deployed by ITR, Chandipur. This comprehensive validation ensures the reliability and precision of the AKASH-NG missile system in real-world scenarios.

State-of-the-Art Missile System:

The AKASH-NG system is a state-of-the-art missile system designed to intercept high-speed, agile aerial threats. Its successful flight test marks a significant advancement in India’s air defence capabilities, showcasing the country’s prowess in developing cutting-edge missile technology.

Paving the Way for User Trials:

The successful flight test has paved the way for User trials, a critical phase in the deployment and operationalization of the AKASH-NG missile system. These trials will further evaluate the system’s performance in diverse operational conditions, ensuring its readiness for deployment.

Commendations from Defence Leadership:

Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh commended DRDO, Indian Air Force (IAF), Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for the successful flight test. He expressed confidence that the development of the AKASH-NG system would significantly enhance the country’s air defence capabilities.

Dr Samir V Kamat, Secretary Department of Defence R&D and Chairman DRDO, also congratulated the teams involved in the successful flight test. Their dedication and expertise have played a pivotal role in achieving this milestone, reinforcing India’s position as a leader in missile technology.
