In a transformative stride towards public empowerment and technological advancement, the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Government of India, recently showcased its innovative mobile applications at the 27th Sundarbans Kristi Mela o Loko Sanskrit Utsav, held from 20th to 29th December 2023. This significant outreach initiative aimed to introduce and familiarize attendees with various services and accomplishments facilitated by MoES, featuring mobile apps like Meghdoot, Damini, Bhookamp, among others.
The event, themed ‘Journey Towards Magnificent India at 75 Years,’ was a resounding success, drawing attention and participation from diverse sectors. Inaugurated by the esteemed former Justice of Calcutta High Court, Shri S. Chakraborty, it served as a platform for government departments, stakeholders, private organizations, and local communities to converge and engage in fruitful discussions.
With the participation of over fifty Government of India departments, six State Government departments, and numerous private organizations, the event resonated with the diverse interests and concerns of the Sundarbans region. Attendees hailed from various areas within the Sundarbans, contributing to the richness and diversity of perspectives.
At the heart of MoES’s engagement during the event was Dr. Jagvir Singh, Scientist G/Adviser at MoES, who played a pivotal role in fostering interaction and knowledge exchange among visitors, particularly students. His involvement transformed the initiative into an interactive platform, allowing attendees to delve deeper into the functionalities and benefits offered by the showcased mobile applications.
Among these apps, Meghdoot stands as a significant innovation, offering real-time weather forecasts, updates on cyclones, and other meteorological information. Damini, another noteworthy app, focuses on providing lightning alerts and safety tips during thunderstorms. Bhookamp, dedicated to disseminating earthquake-related information, is designed to aid in disaster preparedness and response.
The MoES’s efforts in unveiling these user-centric mobile applications underscore its commitment to leveraging technology for the betterment of society. By providing accessible and user-friendly tools, MoES aims to empower citizens with essential information and tools to navigate and mitigate environmental challenges.
The Sundarbans Kristi Mela served as an opportune moment to bridge the gap between technology and the grassroots, facilitating a meaningful exchange of ideas and knowledge. It demonstrated the transformative potential of technology in enhancing public awareness, preparedness, and resilience, particularly in disaster-prone regions like the Sundarbans.
As MoES continues its mission to harness technology for societal benefit, such initiatives pave the way for a more informed and resilient populace, fostering a path towards a digitally inclusive and empowered India. The ministry’s commitment to innovation and outreach remains unwavering, promising a future where technology becomes a catalyst for positive change and progress in our communities.
