On December 20, 2023, a delegation of six members from the European Union (EU) Parliamentary Sub-Committee on Security and Defence (SEDE) paid a visit to the Western Naval Command (WNC) in Mumbai. Led by HE Nathalie Loiseau, MEP and Chairperson of SEDE, the delegation engaged in a productive interaction with VAdm Dinesh K Tripathi, FOCINC, WNC, along with other senior officers from the command.
The primary focus of the visit was to acquaint the EU delegation with the roles, responsibilities, and operational activities of the Western Naval Command. A comprehensive presentation was provided to the visiting delegation, shedding light on the command’s significant contributions and operational dynamics.
Throughout the engagement, various pertinent topics of mutual interest were discussed, emphasizing avenues for strategic security and defense cooperation between the EU and India. The discussions delved into addressing challenges concerning Maritime Security and climate change, highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts in tackling these issues.
An integral part of the visit involved the delegation’s tour aboard the state-of-the-art indigenous warship, INS Chennai, providing firsthand insight into India’s naval capabilities and technological advancements.
The delegation’s itinerary also included a visit to Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), where they received an overview of MDL’s indigenous shipbuilding capabilities and were briefed on the various ongoing projects. India and the EU have a collaborative engagement in the Maritime Security Dialogue, conducted annually, signaling the commitment of both parties to maritime safety and security.
Furthermore, the visit aimed to further fortify naval cooperation between India and the EU. Both sides have previously participated in joint anti-piracy operations off Somalia, indicating their dedication to collective security initiatives. Indian Navy’s active involvement in Combined Maritime Force and various multinational mechanisms under the EU umbrella has reinforced cooperative endeavors.
The current visit by the EU Parliamentary delegation to the Western Naval Command underscores the commitment to fostering stronger relationships and enhancing cooperation in the maritime domain. It serves as a crucial step towards consolidating ties between the EU and India, particularly in the realm of maritime security and defense, paving the way for mutually beneficial collaborations in the future.
