Igniting Curiosity: ISRO’s START Programme Sparks Interest in Space Science and Technology

Space exploration has always captivated the imagination of humanity, beckoning us to push the boundaries of our understanding and venture into the unknown. Recognizing the importance of inspiring the next generation of space enthusiasts, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has launched the Space Science and Technology Awareness Training (START) programme. This initiative aims to ignite a passion for space science and technology among young minds while providing them with valuable insights into the vast realm of space exploration.

Introduction to START

ISRO boasts an active space science programme that encompasses a diverse array of domains, including planetary science, astronomy, heliophysics, atmospheric science, and microgravity research. With an emphasis on fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange, ISRO has opened its doors to academia, encouraging greater participation in space science and technology research.

In 2023, the Science Programme Office at ISRO HQ, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), Dehradun, initiated the online training programme known as START. Designed to cater to undergraduate and postgraduate students of science and technology, START offers introductory-level training in space science and technology, laying the groundwork for future exploration and innovation.

Objectives of the Programme

At the heart of the START programme lies the objective of attracting young minds to the fields of space science and technology. By providing comprehensive training modules covering various aspects of space science and technology, ISRO aims to kindle a sense of curiosity and discovery among participants. Additionally, the programme offers insights into India’s space exploration programme and research opportunities in the field.

Training Details

The START programme is open to postgraduate students and final-year undergraduate students of physical sciences (Physics and Chemistry) and technology (e.g., Electronics, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, etc.) enrolled in educational institutes across India. To be eligible for participation, candidates must fulfill the specified criteria, including minimum attendance requirements and successful completion of examinations.

Host Institute Requirements

Educational institutes interested in hosting the START programme are required to fulfill certain criteria, including the selection of eligible candidates based on aptitude and academic performance. Additionally, host institutes must provide suitable facilities, including lecture halls or auditoriums equipped with internet connectivity and projection facilities.

How to Apply

Institutes wishing to participate in the START programme must register online through the ISRO E-CLASS platform. The registration process involves submitting relevant documentation and nominating a senior faculty member as the coordinator of the programme. The deadline for online registration is April 2, 2024.

Selection of Participants

Once the host institutes are approved as START nodal centers, eligible students can apply for the programme through their respective institutes. The registration period for students opens on April 8 and closes on April 12, 2024. The coordinator of each nodal center will review applications and approve eligible students for participation.

Participant Categories

START caters to three categories of participants:

  1. Students from approved nodal centers
  2. Individuals of any background
  3. Public for knowledge gain

Timeline for Participant Registration

Registration for participants commences on April 8 and concludes on April 12, 2024.

Course Fee

The START programme is offered by ISRO free of cost, with no registration or admission fees.

Conclusion

With the launch of the START programme, ISRO continues its commitment to nurturing talent and fostering innovation in the field of space science and technology. By providing aspiring young minds with access to quality training and resources, ISRO paves the way for a new generation of space explorers poised to make their mark on the cosmos. As participants embark on this transformative journey, they carry with them the promise of a future where the boundaries of space are limited only by the bounds of human imagination.
