The Ministry of Defence recently inked a contract on December 20, 2023, with Mazagon Dockyard Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL), Mumbai, for the procurement of six Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (NGOPVs) intended for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG). This procurement was conducted under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category, totaling Rs1614.89 Crore. Among the six vessels to be acquired, four are set to replace the aging OPVs currently in service, while the remaining two will supplement the ICG fleet.
The acquisition of these significant ICG platforms aims to elevate the ICG’s capabilities, emphasizing the government’s increased focus on Maritime Security. These modern and technologically advanced ships are poised to play a crucial role in bolstering surveillance, law enforcement, search and rescue operations, maritime pollution response, and various other essential capacities, including humanitarian assistance. Equipped with numerous advanced features and cutting-edge equipment, these 115-meter OPVs will feature Multipurpose Drones, AI capability, Wirelessly Controlled Remote Water Rescue Craft Lifebuoy, among others, providing enhanced flexibility and operational advantages to the ICG in confronting multifaceted contemporary challenges.
These Multi-role State-of-the-Art vessels will be entirely designed, developed, and manufactured by MDL in Mumbai, with an expected delivery period of 66 months. The contract aligns with the objectives of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat,’ fostering the nation’s indigenous shipbuilding capabilities, strengthening maritime economic activities, and nurturing the growth of ancillary industries, particularly the MSME sector. Additionally, the project is expected to generate employment opportunities and facilitate expertise development within the country.
