In response to Severe Cyclonic Storm (SCS) ‘Remal,’ the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) demonstrated exemplary coordination with various central and state agencies, ensuring a well-managed response that prevented any loss of life or property at sea. The cyclonic storm, which formed as a low-pressure area on May 22, intensified rapidly before making landfall between West Bengal and Bangladesh on the night of May 26-27.
The ICG’s Headquarters in the North-East Region took proactive measures from the onset, collaborating closely with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), state administrations, and other relevant stakeholders. This included the deployment of nine disaster relief teams strategically placed in vulnerable locations such as Haldia, Paradip, Gopalpur, and Frazerganj.
Ahead of the storm, the ICG ensured that all necessary precautions were taken by issuing timely alerts through its Remote Operating Stations at Haldia and Paradip. These alerts were broadcast in multiple languages via Very High Frequency (VHF) channels, advising fishing boats and merchant vessels to avoid the storm’s path. The ICG also mobilized its ships and aircraft to conduct surveillance and facilitate strategic diversion of the maritime traffic away from the storm.
Post-landfall, the ICG continued its diligent efforts. ICG Ship Varad was promptly dispatched from Paradip to carry out a post-cyclone assessment. In addition, two ICG Dornier aircraft from Bhubaneswar conducted comprehensive surveillance in the North Bay of Bengal to assess the impact and provide necessary support.
Moreover, the ICG’s coordination extended beyond national boundaries. They notified the Bangladesh Coast Guard, urging them to take appropriate measures and alert their local fishing and merchant communities. This international collaboration ensured a broader safety net for all those at sea during the cyclonic storm.
These meticulous and well-coordinated efforts by the ICG exemplify the importance of proactive disaster management and the critical role of inter-agency cooperation in mitigating the impacts of natural disasters. The successful handling of Cyclone Remal underscores the ICG’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property at sea through vigilant and strategic action.
