The Indian Navy is gearing up to exhibit its formidable operational capabilities in an ‘Operational Demonstration’ to be staged at the historic Sindhudurg Fort on the western coast of India on December 4, 2023. The event, under the supervision of Admiral R Hari Kumar, Chief of the Naval Staff, aims to spotlight a diverse array of naval operations conducted by ships and aircraft. It will be observed from the Tarkarli beach by high-ranking government officials, military dignitaries, and the local populace. The demonstration endeavors to honor India’s rich maritime heritage and discontinue colonial practices.
Constructed in 1660 by Maratha Ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the Sindhudurg Fort stands as a testament to India’s maritime legacy and serves as an apt location for the Navy’s display of operational prowess using its frontline assets.
On December 4th, the Indian Navy commemorates Navy Day, a tribute to the audacious “Operation Trident” conducted during the 1971 War, wherein the Navy launched a bold attack on Karachi harbor. The ‘Op Demo’ seeks to celebrate the bravery and determination of naval personnel who achieved the seemingly impossible amidst adverse conditions. Furthermore, the event will showcase the Indian Navy’s advanced ships and aircraft through live telecasts, making it accessible to the general public and online viewers.
The demonstration will feature 20 warships and 40 aircraft, including highlights like the MiG 29K and LCA Navy, in addition to combat beach reconnaissance and assault demonstrations by the Marine Commandos. The program also includes captivating performances by the Naval Band, continuity drills, and hornpipe dances by SCC cadets. The event’s conclusion will be marked by a spectacle—illuminating ships at anchorage followed by a laser show at Sindhudurg Fort.
This event stands as a pioneering initiative by the Indian Navy, breaking away from conventional naval station events. Sindhudurg Fort, situated 550 km from Mumbai and approximately 135 km from the naval station at Goa, required extensive coordination between the Navy, State Government, and local administration to bring these grand displays to life.
Navy Day celebrations strive to enhance public engagement, revive maritime awareness among citizens, and underscore the Navy’s significant contributions to national security.
