Indian Navy’s Swift and Comprehensive Flood Rescue Operations in Tamil Nadu

In a collaborative effort with local authorities, the Indian Navy has undertaken swift and comprehensive flood rescue and relief operations in Tamil Nadu since December 18, 2023. Deploying a range of resources including Dornier Aircraft, ALH and Chetak Helicopters, as well as specialized naval teams, the Indian Navy has been actively engaged in rescue efforts across severely affected areas.

ALH Helicopters conducted extensive air operations, focusing primarily on the heavily impacted Vellkovil and Naranammalpuram areas in Tirunelveli, which were severely affected by floods. Their dedicated efforts led to the successful rescue of 17 individuals, among whom were three pregnant women, from perilous conditions. These individuals were airlifted to safety and safely landed at the Armed Reserve ground in Playamkottai. Upon arrival, immediate first aid and necessary facilities were provided by the local administration.

Simultaneously, a specialized team comprising 26 Naval personnel, including two officers and two specialist divers from INS Kattabomman, embarked on a daring rescue mission in Tuticorin. Overcoming multiple water bodies, the team traversed on foot, employing lifebuoys and ropes to reach distressed areas. Their commendable efforts resulted in the successful rescue of over 100 individuals, escorting them to safer zones on December 18, 2023.

To reinforce these ongoing operations, two Gemini boats and four Clearance Divers from HQTN&P area were dispatched via Dornier for continued rescue missions. Additionally, the Indian Navy facilitated the transfer of approximately 400 kgs of rescue materials from Chennai to Tuticorin and 3500 kgs from Rameshwaram to Madurai through its Dornier aircraft and naval teams.

The Indian Navy’s rescue and relief operations, conducted in close coordination with state government officials, continue relentlessly in flood-affected areas through nearby units such as INS Kattabomman and INS Parundu, operating under the aegis of HQTN&P. Their unwavering efforts signify the commitment of the Indian Navy to aid and assist communities affected by natural calamities, showcasing their dedication to serving the nation in times of need.
