Indian Railways Achieves Significant Freight Loading Growth and Revenue Surge in 2023


Indian Railways marked a commendable performance from April to November 2023 by loading 1015.669 million tonnes (MT) of freight, compared to 978.724 MT loaded during the same period last year, indicating an improvement of approximately 36.945 MT. This increase in loading resulted in earnings of Rs 110007.5 crore, showing a notable enhancement of about Rs 4102.445 crore compared to the corresponding period in the prior year.

Specifically in November 2023, the railways accomplished an originating freight loading of 128.419 MT, demonstrating a 4.33% improvement over the 123.088 MT loaded in November 2022. The freight revenue reached Rs. 14077.94 Crores during November 2023, reflecting a 3.82% increase from the Rs 13559.83 Crores earned in November 2022.

The freight loading during November 2023 encompassed 65.48 MT in Coal, 14.99 MT in Iron Ore, 5.25 MT in Pig Iron and Finished Steel, 5.58 MT in Cement (Excl. Clinker), 4.61 MT in Clinker, 3.82 MT in Foodgrains, 5.97 MT in Fertilizers, 4.176 MT in Mineral Oil, 6.91 MT in Containers, and 8.59 MT in other balanced goods.

Indian Railways, abiding by the philosophy “Hungry For Cargo,” dedicated continuous efforts to streamline business operations and enhance service delivery at competitive prices. A customer-centric approach, coupled with the proactive work of Business Development Units and agile policy-making, contributed significantly to the railways’ remarkable accomplishments.
