The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) designated 2023 as the International Year of Millets. India’s millet production in 2022-23 reached 17.32 million tonnes, with detailed state-wise data available in Annexure-I.
The Indian government is employing a collaborative approach to celebrate the International Year of Millets (IYM) 2023, aiming to boost millet promotion and meet IYM objectives. The Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (DA&FW) is executing the Sub-Mission on Nutri-Cereals under the National Food Security Mission (NFSM) across 28 states, 2 union territories including Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
Under NFSM–Nutri Cereals, farmers receive incentives through states/UTs for various agricultural technologies, crop demonstrations, certified seed distribution, nutrient and pest management techniques, farm tools, water-saving devices, farmer training, workshops, seed kits, and media publicity. The Indian Institute of Millets Research (IIMR) in Hyderabad serves as the Center of Excellence, facilitating the sharing of millet research, practices, and technologies nationally and internationally to establish India as a global hub for ‘Shree Anna’.
