In a dramatic turn of events, the Indian Navy’s INS Kolkata, deployed in the Arabian Sea, showcased its prowess by thwarting the nefarious plans of Somali pirates attempting to hijack ships transiting through the region. Through sustained high-tempo operations lasting over 40 hours, INS Kolkata intercepted the pirate ship MV Ruen on March 16, 2024, effectively putting an end to its reign of terror.
The merchant vessel MV Ruen had been under the control of Somali pirates since its hijacking in December 2023, posing a significant threat to maritime security in the region. As part of its Maritime Security Operations, the Indian Navy had been diligently monitoring traffic in areas of interest, which eventually led to the tracking of the pirate ship’s movement.
On the morning of March 15, 2024, INS Kolkata closed in on the pirate ship, confirming the presence of armed pirates through a ship-launched drone. In a reckless display of hostility, the pirates shot down the drone and fired upon the Indian warship. Responding with precision and adherence to international laws, INS Kolkata disabled the pirate ship’s steering system and navigational aids, forcing it to come to a halt.
Undertaking precisely measured actions and engaging in forceful negotiations, INS Kolkata successfully compelled the pirates to surrender, leading to the release of MV Ruen and its original crew without any harm.
