Ministry of Coal Reviews Coal Production Targets and Operationalization Strategies for FY 2023-24

Shri. M Nagaraju, serving as Additional Secretary and Nominated Authority at the Ministry of Coal, recently led a comprehensive review meeting focusing on the status of captive and commercial coal mines slated for production in the fiscal year 2023-24. This session aimed to assess ongoing operations and anticipated outputs from these mines.

During the meeting, the Additional Secretary and Nominated Authority stressed the imperative nature of coal block allottees taking proactive measures to meet the production targets earmarked for the fiscal year 2023-24. Moreover, emphasis was placed on expediting operational processes for coal blocks that are in advanced stages of being operationalized.

A significant highlight was the revelation that the cumulative coal production from captive and commercial coal mines, recorded between April 1st, 2023, and November 20th, 2023, amounted to approximately 80 MT. This achievement indicates a notable year-on-year growth of 23% compared to the corresponding period in FY 2022-23.

Projections for the ongoing fiscal year, 2023-24, indicate an expected production of 145 MT from these mines. Such a substantial increase in domestic coal production is envisioned to significantly curtail the country’s dependence on coal imports, contributing to greater self-sufficiency in the coal sector.
