Ministry of Defence Inks Deal with BHEL for Upgraded Super Rapid Gun Mounts for Indian Navy

The Ministry of Defence has recently inked a deal with M/s Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) located in Haridwar on November 28, 2023. The contract, valued at ₹2956.89 Cr, pertains to the acquisition of 16 Upgraded Super Rapid Gun Mounts (SRGM) accompanied by associated equipment and accessories for the Indian Navy. This procurement falls under the Buy (Indian) category.

Manufactured at the Haridwar Plant by M/s BHEL, the upgraded SRGM stands as a medium-caliber anti-missile/anti-aircraft point defense weapon system renowned for its sustained rate of fire and precision. Demonstrating exceptional capabilities, the weapon system excels in engaging multiple threats within complex scenarios, boasting a commendable track record against missiles and agile fast attack crafts.

The installation of these upgraded SRGMs is slated for both active and newly constructed vessels of the Indian Navy, a responsibility entrusted to M/s Mazagaon Dock and Shipbuilders Ltd. in Mumbai and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers in Kolkata. This initiative is anticipated to generate approximately two and a half lakh mandays of employment over a span of five years. Moreover, it aims to foster the active involvement of diverse Indian industries, including MSMEs, thereby significantly contributing to the Government’s mission of achieving self-reliance (‘Atmanirbharta’) in the defense sector.
