NHPC, India’s prominent hydropower company, has taken a significant leap toward clean and sustainable energy solutions by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Gujarat Power Corporation Limited (GPCL), Government of Gujarat, for the development of the proposed 750 MW Kuppa Pumped Hydro Storage Project. The MoU, inaugurated under the ambit of “Vibrant Gujarat,” marks NHPC’s investment of an estimated Rs. 4000 crores in this pioneering project, strategically located at Chhota Udaipur, Gujarat.
This strategic collaboration between NHPC and the Government of Gujarat aims to leverage pumped hydro storage projects as a pragmatic solution for energy storage, contributing to the national goal of clean and green energy. The implementation of the Kuppa Pumped Hydro Storage Project is anticipated to generate substantial employment opportunities and provide a significant impetus to the local economy.
The formal signing of the MoU took place at the Secretariat in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, on January 3, 2023. Managing Director of GPCL, Shri Arun Mahesh Babu, and NHPC’s Executive Director of Renewable Energy and Green Hydrogen, Shri V.R. Srivastava, signed the agreement in the esteemed presence of Gujarat’s Chief Minister, Shri Bhupendra Patel, and Energy Minister, Shri Kanubhai Desai. The pact is aligned with the nation’s overarching energy objectives of achieving a renewable energy capacity of 500 GW by 2030 and the ambitious “Net Zero” target by 2070.
NHPC Limited stands as a pioneer in the hydropower sector within India. The company boasts a total installed capacity of 7,097.2 MW of renewable energy, encompassing wind and solar energy, through its 25 power stations, with an additional 1,520 MW generated via subsidiaries. Presently, NHPC, including its subsidiaries and Joint Venture companies, is actively involved in the construction of 15 projects, collectively accounting for an installed capacity of 10,449 MW.
This collaborative venture between NHPC and the Government of Gujarat not only marks a significant stride in the realm of renewable energy but also underscores the commitment toward a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable energy future for the nation.
