President Droupadi Murmu Champions Tribal Environmental Wisdom in Meghalaya

In a momentous gathering at Mawphlang, Meghalaya, President Droupadi Murmu addressed the public, marking January 16, 2024, as a day of significance. Virtually inaugurating key infrastructural projects, including upgraded roads and the foundation stones for a ropeway and tourist accommodations, the President emphasized the rich environmental heritage of the tribal communities.

President Murmu acknowledged the tribal people’s historical role as stewards of environmental conservation, rooted in indigenous knowledge and cultural values. The belief in ‘U Basa’ or goddess residing in lush green forests was highlighted as a testament to the symbiotic relationship between tribes and nature. Stressing the pivotal role of women in conservation and climate action, the President commended tribal women for leading environmental protection efforts.

Meghalaya, the President noted, is successfully balancing tradition and modernity, emerging as a growth leader with substantial foreign direct investment, robust exports, and a dynamic demographic landscape. President Murmu expressed optimism that the state’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development would serve as an inspiring model for the nation.
