The 5th Edition of the Meghalaya Games kicked off in Tura, Meghalaya, with an inspiring inauguration by the President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, on January 15, 2024. In her address, President Murmu highlighted the untapped potential for sports development in the North East region, emphasizing its rich sporting culture.
Acknowledging the diversity of the nation as its strength, the President urged leveraging it to enhance India’s global sports image. She stressed the importance of supporting talent from tribal areas, especially women, to become professional sportspersons. Expressing delight in the North East’s encouragement of women in sports, she noted the region’s contribution to producing outstanding female athletes.
President Murmu also underscored the potential of adventure sports and tourism, urging prioritized exploration. She commended the significant strides in India’s sporting culture, citing government initiatives like Khelo India that identify and nurture future champions. Encouraging children and youth to engage in sports, she emphasized the holistic benefits of physical and mental fitness, team spirit, and competitiveness.
Applauding the government’s decision to decentralize sporting events, President Murmu anticipated that initiatives like Meghalaya Games would foster excellence, competitiveness, and a vibrant sporting ecosystem.
