On January 28th, we celebrate the birth anniversary of one of the prominent figures in India’s struggle for independence, Lala Lajpat Rai. Fondly known as “Punjab Kesari” or “Lion of Punjab,” Rai played a pivotal role in shaping the narrative of the freedom movement.
Born in 1865 in Dhudike, Punjab, Lala Lajpat Rai emerged as a fervent advocate for the rights and freedom of his fellow countrymen. His unwavering commitment to the cause earned him the title “Punjab Kesari,” symbolizing his strength and courage.
Lala Lajpat Rai’s journey in the fight for India’s independence began during his early years when he actively participated in social and political reforms. Alongside stalwarts like Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Bipin Chandra Pal, Rai formed the triumvirate known as the “Lal-Bal-Pal” trio, which became the driving force behind the extremist wing of the Indian National Congress.

Despite facing brutal police action during a protest in Lahore, Rai stood firm, sustaining severe injuries that ultimately led to his untimely death.
