Successful Deployment of Aditya-L1 Satellite’s Magnetometer Boom Marks Milestone in Space Exploration

The Aditya-L1 satellite’s 6-meter magnetometer boom, deployed successfully on January 11, 2024, after being in stowed condition for 132 days post-launch. Equipped with two advanced fluxgate magnetometer sensors, the boom measures the interplanetary magnetic field’s low intensity in space. Positioned at 3 and 6 meters from the spacecraft body, these sensors minimize the spacecraft-generated magnetic field impact, enabling precise measurements. Constructed with carbon fibre reinforced polymer, the boom’s articulated mechanism, using spring-driven hinges, deploys in an accordion fashion. The deployment, controlled by a patented Kevlar closed control loop mechanism, was executed smoothly within approximately 9 seconds.
