In a significant stride towards bolstering India’s maritime capabilities, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated three groundbreaking infrastructure projects worth over Rs 4,000 crore in Kochi, Kerala. The projects, including the New Dry Dock (NDD) at Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), the International Ship Repair Facility (ISRF) of CSL, and the LPG Import Terminal of Indian Oil Corporation Limited, align with the Prime Minister’s vision to revolutionize India’s ports, shipping, and waterways sector.
Addressing the audience, PM Modi emphasized the historical importance of ports in India’s prosperity and envisioned their renewed role in the current era of global trade. He outlined the government’s commitment to enhancing port capacities, investing in infrastructure, and improving connectivity under the Sagarmala Project.
The newly inaugurated projects, such as the New Dry Dock, mark a significant leap in India’s shipbuilding and repair capabilities. PM Modi hailed the Kochi Shipyard’s role in building ‘Made in India’ aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, emphasizing the importance of reducing dependence on foreign countries.
The Prime Minister highlighted the transformative reforms in the ports, shipping, and waterways sector over the past decade, leading to increased investments and employment opportunities. He commended the double-digit annual growth of Indian ports, showcasing the country’s prowess in ship-turnaround time.
PM Modi underlined the global recognition of India’s potential in trade, citing agreements during India’s G20 Presidency and the Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor. He expressed confidence that these developments would contribute to the creation of a developed India.
The projects unveiled, including the International Ship Repair Facility and LPG Import Terminal, are poised to turn Kochi into India and Asia’s largest ship repair center. The Prime Minister foresaw the establishment of a new ecosystem of MSMEs, further boosting economic development in Kerala and the southern region.
In concluding remarks, PM Modi praised the role of the fishermen community in the blue economy and port-led development. He affirmed the government’s commitment to uplift the seafood processing sector, leading to increased income for fishermen.
