Vice Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, AVSM, NM assumed office as the Vice Chief of the Naval Staff on January 4, 2024. Upon his appointment, he paid homage to fallen soldiers at the National War Memorial, placing a floral wreath as a tribute to their sacrifices. Prior to his current role, Vice Admiral Tripathi served as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command.
With a background from Sainik School Rewa and the National Defence Academy, he began his career in the Indian Navy in 1985. As a Communication and Electronic Warfare specialist, he served on several naval warships, commanding ships such as Vinash, Kirch, and Trishul. His diverse experience encompasses key operational and staff roles, including Fleet Operations Officer of the Western Fleet, Director of Naval Operations, and Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Policy and Plans).
His tenure as Commandant of the Indian Naval Academy at Ezhimala, Kerala, marked a significant phase in his career. Later, serving as Chief of Personnel, he played a vital role in maintaining operational readiness despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Admiral Tripathi is a distinguished alumnus of institutions such as the Defence Services Staff College and the US Naval War College, where he received the prestigious Robert E Bateman International Prize. Recognized for his dedication, he has been honored with the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and the Nausena Medal.
Beyond his military expertise, Vice Admiral Tripathi is passionate about sports, particularly tennis, badminton, and cricket. He also exhibits a keen interest in international relations, military history, and leadership. Married to Mrs. Shashi Tripathi, an artist and homemaker, the couple has a son who is a practicing lawyer married to Tanya, a professional working in policy making.
