Vice Admiral Lochan Singh Pathania assumed charge as the Chief Hydrographer to the Government of India on February 1, 2024. Commissioned in the Executive branch of the Indian Navy in 1990, he brings a wealth of experience and expertise as a Hydrography Specialist to this crucial role.
During his illustrious career spanning more than three decades, Vice Admiral Pathania has played a pivotal role in advancing hydrographic capabilities in India. His command over IN Ships Darshak and Sandhayak exemplifies his hands-on experience in hydrographic surveys, covering the entire stretch of the country and the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). Notably, he undertook the challenging task of data collection for the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) arbitration and contributed to the production of new charts in the Sundarbans delta.
His international exposure includes serving onboard HMS Bulldog of the Royal Navy, further enriching his understanding of global maritime operations. Vice Admiral Pathania has held various crucial shore appointments, including Interviewing Officer & Deputy President of Naval Selection Board, Principal Director (Hydrography) at NHQ, Officer-in-Charge at the National Hydrographic Office (NHO), and Joint Chief Hydrographer.
Vice Admiral Pathania’s educational background is equally impressive. A graduate of the Naval Academy, he is an alumnus of the International Maritime Academy (IMO) in Trieste, Italy, Defence Services Staff College (DSSC) in Wellington, and the College of Defence Management (CDM) in Secunderabad. He holds a Masters degree in Defence and Strategic Studies from the University of Madras and a Masters of Management Studies (MMS) from Osmania University.
One of his notable contributions lies in his expertise in international maritime laws, particularly those related to maritime boundary delimitation. Vice Admiral Pathania has played a crucial role in addressing issues pertaining to maritime boundaries and the settlement of the Extended Continental Shelf beyond the Exclusive Economic Zone. His appointment as Chief Hydrographer marks a significant milestone, ensuring that India continues to navigate its maritime challenges with precision and strategic insight under his capable leadership.
